Sweden has a strong opportunity to strengthen its international position in advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs)

— PRESS RELEASE —

Sweden has a strong opportunity to strengthen its international position in advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) – but achieving this will require more than world-class research.

OptiCell Solutions Strengthens the Foundation for Next-Generation Cell Therapies
Huddinge, Sweden 06-AUG-2026

The Swedish Royal Academy of Engineering Sciences’ (IVA) report from 11 June 2026 on Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products (ATMPs) highlights many of the issues that we at OptiCell Solutions encounter in our daily work.

The report concludes that Sweden benefits from outstanding research, strong clinical expertise, and an advanced healthcare system. However, continued progress will depend on improved coordination, increased investment, and stronger technological and industrial platforms. IVA emphasizes the need for shared technology platforms, multidisciplinary environments, and closer integration between research, healthcare, and industry.

This aligns closely with our own experience.

The development of cell and gene therapies depends on a robust infrastructure surrounding the therapies themselves. This includes access to well-characterized human cells, standardized cell collection, quality assurance, traceability, logistics, and processes that can support both research and industrial development.

OptiCell Solutions was established to contribute precisely to this part of the value chain.

From our facility in Huddinge, Sweden, we collect and provide human cell materials for research and development in cell and gene therapy. Through collaborations with clinical, academic, and industrial partners, we aim to help shorten the journey from scientific discovery to innovative treatments.

One of the report’s most important conclusions is that Sweden cannot be a global leader across every aspect of ATMP. Instead, resources should be focused on areas where the country has clear competitive advantages and the potential to achieve international excellence. The report identifies technology platforms, cell technologies, manufacturing, quality assurance, and clinical infrastructure as key strategic areas.

For OptiCell Solutions, this represents both validation and responsibility.

It validates our belief that access to specialized cell collection and a robust supply chain is a strategic component of the ATMP ecosystem.

It also reinforces our responsibility to continue evolving our business—from a specialized service provider into a scalable platform capable of supporting a growing number of research projects, clinical collaborations, and industrial development programs, both in Sweden and internationally.

IVA’s report is therefore an important contribution to the discussion. Sweden already possesses many of the capabilities required to become a global leader in ATMP. The next step is to connect
these strengths through effective structures, establish long-term funding mechanisms, and enable specialized companies to grow alongside academia, healthcare, and industry.

That is the future OptiCell Solutions is committed to helping build.
